Statuette of the Madonna.— In the central stained-glass window
(French, 13th cent.), Female saint; to the left and right, German
medallions of the 12th cent., Expulsion from the Temple, and Mary
Magdalen anointing the feet of Christ. In front of the middle win¬
dow. Processional ass (South-German, 13th cent.; the oldest example
known of these figures). The glass-case by the window contains
mostly Romanesque ivory carvings, those on the right dating from
the Carolingian period and the time of the Saxon emperors, those
on the left French-Romanesque works; above, 42. Reliquary (be¬
ginning of the 11th cent.).
Room 23 contains sculptures and pictures mostly of the early
15th century. In the middle, Shrine of St. Patroclus, by Meister
Sigefrid (1313), from Soest. To the left, 1207-1210. Meister Bert-
hold, Four pictures from the altar of theDeichsler family at Nurem¬
berg (SS. Elizabeth, Mary, Peter Martyr, and John the Baptist).
Between them, 290 d. Wooden statue of the Madonna (South Ger¬
man). To the left, below, 1238. Cologne School (manner of Meister
Wilhelm), Virgin surrounded by female saints. — On the other
partition wall, 562. School of Martin Schongauer, Winged altar
with the Crucifixion.
In the portion of Room 23 leading to the Basilica, the arrange¬
ment begins beside the marble portal. To the left and right of it,
School of Michael Pacher, Statues of saints, richly gilded; *1621-
1621 c. Hans Multscher, Eight altar-panels with scenes from the
life of the Virgin and the Passion (1437). On the partition walls
opposite, to the right, Bavarian Master (1516), Winged altar with
